Our next Staff Spotlight interview is with Ms. Neli, another one of the Group Leaders for the Bell Enrichment program. Enjoy!

Ms. Neli, what is more interesting about your job here at Eagle?

It’s very challenging, because it’s an all boys school. But I enjoy the challenge, and I enjoy working at Eagle.

Why did you choose to work at Eagle?

I didn’t choose to work here; I was assigned here by Bell, and I love it.

Do you think you’ll work at Eagle for a long time?

I see myself working here at Eagle for a long time. I love working here, and I would like to stay.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Paint! I love to create paintings that are unique, and to create something different.

If you could be an animal, which would would you be and why?

I would be a bird. I like to be free and adventurous and I like to travel. Birds represent that.

Thank you, Ms. Neli!

Anger

by Carlton Williams

Anger is something that everybody goes through in their lives. Anger can get you in trouble. Like let’s say you get angry at a cop, and you put your hands on him, then there would be consequences. It’s okay to be angry, but you have to have control over your anger because you can get out of hand with it. For example, today when I was in class, instead of responding to the guy who was saying stuff to me I should have told the teacher what was going on or taken a deep breath. For another example, when my mom asks me to do chores I should just do it and talk to her about it instead of just getting mad.

Being angry without self-control will always have consequences, and that’s what I’m working on.

Eagle Academy Wins Intense Overtime Triller

Our coverage team was courtside for Eagle's overtime thriller!

Our coverage team was courtside for Eagle’s overtime thriller!

by Kesean Cooper and Jaione Ford

Last week, the Eagle Academy varsity basketball team played Monroe Campus in an exciting game that went into overtime.

In the first quarter, the Eagles were losing badly to Monroe Campus. They were not doing well on defense, they were letting them get in the paint and letting them shoot. The Eagles were sloppy on offense, shooting unnecessary shots and committing turnovers.

In the second quarter, the Eagles were starting to get back in the game. They were being smart on defense and offense. They were forcing turnovers and stopping the ball. On offense, they were starting to make smart shots, they weren’t settling for jump shots right away. They were taking it slow.

In the third quarter, the Eagles were starting to lose it. They were taking bad shots again, and on defense they were fouling like crazy. Close to the end of the quarter, two Eagles got technical fouls. They were getting frustrated by this stressful game. Eagle was losing 50-45 at the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles went up a bunch of points but Monroe Campus came back by being smart with the ball. Close to the end of the fourth, the game was close. Monroe and Eagle were going back and forth, and the game was tied at 62 with 29.2 seconds left. The Eagles made a three pointer with 9.4 seconds left in the game. When Monroe inbounded the ball, they took two dribbles and shot a three and the Eagles fouled a three-point shooter with one second to go! When the Monroe Campus guard went to the line, he made all three free throws. After the free throw, Justin inbounded the ball to Teshaun Beckles at half-court. Beckles passed it to Shane Neal, who shot the three and made it off the glass but it did not count! The buzzer rang before he got the shot off. Eagle fans were devastated because they thought it should have counted. Now we were going to overtime!!!

With four minutes to go in overtime, the Eagles had to play smart and they did. With a minute left, the Eagles were down by three points and they had the ball. Senior guard Justin Jones got a bounce pass and made a trey to tie the game up. On defense, they were being smart and stopping the ball but Monroe was fighting it and made shots to stay in the game. Monroe and the Eagles traded threes in the last minute, and the Eagles beat the Monroe press and Jaquan Strong made a layup to give them the lead with 9 seconds to go! Monroe Campus was able to get it down the court, and their big man got a rebound and was fouled with 1.6 seconds left!! With their big man at the line they were praying to tie the game with two free throws. Monroe’s big man missed the first one and then took his time with the second and missed! Beckles got the rebound and passed it and the game was over! The Eagles won!

Final score: 75-73

Jabari Parker tears ACL, out for season

Jabari Parker is out for the season with a torn ACL..

by Mazi Campbell

Jabari Parker tore  his ACL during a game against the Phoenix Suns earlier this week. Parker was attacking the basket, and he was trying to switch directions and tore his ACL badly. He is now done for the season. I think the Milwaukee Bucks are in bad shape, because they lost an important player on their team. In my perspective, I think that Jabari Parker his one of the best rookie players in the NBA this season.

In the first game of the season, Eagle Academy played Lehman high school and they blew them out 95-46.

Eagles defense was good, and our offense was spectacular. Lehman’s offense was really bad, because they had a lot of turnovers. Eagle’s lead scorer was #35, Junior Tashaun Beckles, with 26 points. Their second lead scorer had 16 points. Number 10, the point guard for Lehman, was nice. He had a sick crossover and a good left hand shot.

Eagle Academy’s transition offense was amazing, their defense led to easy scoring. I think the Eagles will be successful down the road, and maybe win the championship.

Book Review: We Beat The Streets

by Jariel Perez

Hey guys i’m back with another book review and today we’re doing We Beat The Streets.

We Beat The Streets is a book about these three people that share a freindship with each other and become doctors. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt are their names. In this book it demonstrates the obstacles they had to overcome from jail, murder, growing up in the hood, and all kinds of things like that.

This book involves storys told by these doctors. This book might even be an inspiration to people who are in the hood and want to get through life. This book for sure will bring joy to people who enjoy books with diffrent plots or storys.

Overall, this book is pretty amazing and I’d rate this book a 8 just because of the fact that this doesn’t involve all of the really major details in their but either way this book is fine. There’s also another book in the series named “The Pact” and is for mature people.

Book Review: Bone

by Jariel Perez

Bone: Out from Boneville

Bone: Out from Boneville

Bone is about these 3 cousins that aren’t necessarily humans. They were run out of town and separated. Now they’ve regrouped, and their main objective is to find Boneville.

During their time being separated, the book’s plot was more focused on Fonebone, one of the cousins. The path that Fonebone choose was in, my perspective, very helpful. He met different creatures, and all these different groups of people.

Overall, I think this book is great but I wish there were more interesting quests that Fonebone could follow to bring him to Boneville. This is still a great book. I’d actually reccommend this book to people who really enjoy graphic novels.

Stay tuned so you could catch my next book review.

Arno: one of the best new assassins in Assassin’s Creed

Arno ready to take the Leap of Faith and scout the area.

by Eric Acevedo

Assassin’s Creed: Unity is is a new Assassin’s Creed game with new and better weapons.

The story of Assassins Creed Unity is a character named Arno. His background is that he had two dads: one was an assassin and one was a templar. Arno blamed himself  for the death of his two dads, so he became an assassin to figure who killed them. Arno becomes an assassin through his adventures, where he gets a weapon called the  Hidden Blade. A couple of years later, Arno finds himself in an Assassin tower and finds an Assassin outfit. Arno’s master him the Phantom Blade, but at first Arno does not know how to use it.  Arno’s master gave him a mission to kill a templar, but told him he can only use his Phantom Blade. Arno was nervous, because he thought he might hurt or kill a civilian. Arno said in his head, “I’m going to listen to my master,” but he just gave up and used his pistol. Once everybody heard that gunshot, Arno almost killed an innocent person because the person walked in front of his target.Arno got nervous because if he killed that person he will never forgive himself  because he saw his two dads die in front of him. Arno thought, “I won’t let anybody’s parents die in front  them because I don`t want them to suffer like I did for the half of my  life, living with no parents.”

A few years later, Arno was planning his tactics for a mission. He was ready to go ahead and kill his target. When he was ready to kill his target, he saw that his mentor, Assassin Brother Bellec, had killed the master assassin. A few hours later, he realized that Bellec had turned  on the Assassin Brotherhood and poisoned the master assassin by putting poison in his drink. Arno had to kill Bellec before he gave important information to the Templars. Two years later, he had to kill his final target named Germain, because he had all the information and knew where the Assassin Tower is hidden. When Arno killed Germain, he realized that Germain had a forbidden weapon and a forbidden book with secrets of the Templars. A few days later, Arno  brought back these two things to the Assassins Tower.  On that day Arno kept the weapon and stopped the war and became the best ASSASSIN in Paris.

The new weapon that Arno uses in AC: Unity.

I think Assassin`s Creed Unity is going to be great because Ubisoft put in the new weapon I mentioned above, The Phantom Blade. The Phantom Blade is a mini crossbow that shoots arrows or mini-knives. Also, you  get to customize  your outfit and you get outfits that help you blend in with the crowd and the environment. You get to do heists to improve your level, your amor, your outfit, and your weapons. In this game, the combat is a lot harder than in the previous Assassin’s Creed games. I like to be challenged in combat, because I’m a good really player when it comes to fighting/combat. Also, I like the parkour in Assassin’s Creed because you get to jump off buildings and while you’re jumping off the building you get to assassinate your target. For me, that’s pretty cool to do. Also, in single player if you’re having trouble you get to call your friends, (assassins, I like to call them my bros) for help. In the game, you also get to have naval combat. IF YOU’RE AN ASSASSIN’S CREED, FAN BUY THE GAME TODAY!

I HATE BULLYING

by James Rhodes

Bullies think smaller kids are weaker than them.

Bullies think smaller kids are weaker than them.

I really hate bullying. I really don’t appreciate that people who can’t fight get beaten up, and the bully gets away with it. I know that a bunch of Eagle Academy kids have written about bullying and how it connects to them but for me, I’m going to give my own opinion.

For bullies, I understand their way of thinking that if they act nice, other people might call them nerds. The point is, why would bullies make fun of other people just because it was done to them during their childhood?

I, for an example, was bullied when I went to school in Georgia. They called me stuff like fat man and teletubby. My god-sister’s friend committed suicide because she was getting bullied every day. She was only ten or eleven years old. A lot of people kill themselves because they think they have a terrible life, and some kids think that suicide is the best solution because they are being bullied.

Bullies don’t usually pick on people that are taller than them or know how to fight. Bullies don’t care about others’ approval, they only care about themselves and if they get into trouble, they make up lies. Bullies think that their parents will protect them even though they did something wrong. From my perspective, and the actions of bullying that I’ve had seen, bullies like to make fun of minuscule kids than them but only pick on the people if they know that tall person is weak. Even though on the outside a bully looks tough, the bully can still sometimes be soft on the inside.

Bullies think they're so tough!!!!!!

Bullies think they’re so tough!!!!!!

Quotes from family and friends

My Mom: ” If somebody hits you, hit them back.”

Adrian Mendez: ” If some people don’t speak up and tell their problems about bullying, they will keep getting bullied everyday.”

My final thoughts

If you are watching the same kid picking on kids everyday and you don’t say anything, then when the bully gets into trouble you will be considered a witness. Bullies will keep starting fights and picking on weaker kids if you don’t speak up.
