GOING INTO MIDDLE SCHOOL!! (part two)

By Jaden Baker

(Continued from Going into Middle School, part one)

Now we had to introduce ourselves. I was nervous to meet the people in this new school. Luckily, I already had friends here; friends from elementary school, that were fun to hang out with. But we were put into different groups, so we couldn’t talk most of the time. I still tried to make some nice new friends.

We started to do something called libation, where they told us we were to use it to keep our ancestors and unhealthy members of our community with us. A few people went up and wanted to do it, but I was feeling a bit salty to speak to the crowd. Also, I did not know anyone who was not well in my community. When we finished libation, we had to go to our classes. The first class I went to, we had to make a circle with the tables. We were each given M&M’s, then we had to take out our papers and pencils. We were given topics on the board. The questions were based on what color of M&M we had gotten, and we had to share what we wrote. I really did not want to get up and do that, speech we have to do before we share something, but they really forced us to say it. I was nervous to talk to everyone out loud, but we had to. I forgot what I wrote, but I think I wrote an average amount.

When we got to math class, I thought I would have one of those mad teachers. We went into the classroom, and the teacher greeted us. She told us to be silent, so I started to believe that she wasn’t a good teacher. She gave us work to do. I thought “it was easy” to myself, and then I thought that this school would be easy work. We did many activities in the class, including group activities. Then we had another class, where we had to learn about our school. I thought it would be E.L.A. but then I noticed we were just talking about the school. The teacher discussed how we are supposed to introduce ourselves before we respond to any question. That got me confused and mad, that we had to do that for every response. We started to do photography. I thought that we were gonna just take pictures the first day but…we just had to take notes about the camera.

After that, we headed to lunch. I was guessing that nobody even wanted to eat. The food was so frozen that you could see ice on it. We had frozen food every day. Often I thought that I could get through this program by cheating, but I knew that would be wrong. Also I knew I wouldn’t learn anything that way.

At the end of the day, we had to sign up for a class. We were only allowed to choose two classes, so I chose two common classes: hip-hop and dance, and martial arts. The first day going to those classes, I took hip hop and dance first. I thought it was fun. When we finished, I went to my next class: martial arts. I liked the class, and was happy I was in it. The master told me that martial arts is about defending yourself.

We started to learn the middle school pledge, and we got put into classes based on what house we were in. I was in X-house, which meant the Malcolm X house. There are also other houses, the Obama house, Che Guevara house, and Roberto Clemente house. Now we started to have to know the school pledge. We spent every single day working on the pledge. They told us we needed to know the pledge to get into the school, so we studied the pledge every day before we went to lunch. There were many people who wanted to show off that they knew the pledge.

Summer Bridge was about to end, and I already knew the whole pledge. We needed to complete the whole pledge to graduate summer bridge. Also we had to do a task they asked us to write. I accidentally made some mistakes, so I wrote the whole task all over again. I was able to complete the task and hand it in on time.  We came to the day where they chose who will graduate from  Summer Bridge. We went into a room that looked like a judge’s courtroom. We saw a skit performed about a guy who gets into people’s heads and makes them fail. When the skit ended, the teacher told us he was going to give us our last assignment. If he gave us our assignment on an index card, that meant we passed and went on to the graduation. If he didn’t give you an index card, that meant you were not allowed to go. Almost everybody was out f the room, and I was almost the last person left. Finally, they called me up and he gave me an index card.

I stayed up all night to do the assignment, and then the day came. I was graduating from Summer Bridge. We had to get there early, and when we got there not everyone was there. Some people had forgotten to do the task, so they had to do it quickly. We started to walk into the room, and I saw my mom and my sister. We sang the pledge, and called out our houses. I felt happy, and my mom took me out afterwards. And that was the last day of Summer Bridge.

Now I am a full fledged Eagle, and I am (awesome, obviously) cool. I am passing all my classes, and I am now going on trips for good behavior. There are many more activities, and I want to do them all! I will be the biggest, smartest, coolest kid in this school. Well, that’s a maybe.

My top 5 action movies!

by Reydi Venturadownload (2)

I’ve seen a lot of cool posts on the Eagle Express, but rarely any movie related post. Here’s a movie article that I hope people can enjoy and relate to. Some people might not agree with the movies I like, but these are the movies that I love. I hope whoever reads this can watch some of the movies I listed here and love them just like I did.

5: Pixels is a really cool movie that is funny and action packed. I think it’s a good movie because it teaches kids to not give up, because Adam Sandler didn’t give up in Donkey Kong. The reason I like this movie is because it shows classic games that I would love to play. I also like this movie because video games were finally brought to the big screen.

4: X-Men days of future past is one of the best movies of 2014, because it shows both the future and the past of the X-Men story. The movie also shows kids that you can change the way you are. It was also very good because we learned more about their origins. The last reason why I like this movie is because we got to see what will happen if villains like Magneto, Mystique, Quicksilver,
and many more, but Magneto turned bad again.

3: Batman vs Superman is one of the best DC Comics movies ever. The reason why it is so good is because it shows the DC heroes that were originally in the Justice League. It also shows the heroes who will have other movies by themselves, like Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Flash, and Aqua Man. The movie was mostly good because we get to see who would win in a fight, Batman or Superman, and it seems like Batman won because Doomsday killed Superman.

2: Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the is the best Star Wars movie I’ve ever seen. They added new characters, and made new story lines. They made Rey the main hero and killed off Han Solo. I think The Force Awakens has the best story line in any Star Wars movie ever. My favorite characters are Fin, Rey, Han Solo, and Kylo Ren.suicide-squad-cast

1: Suicide Squad did not come out yet, but I have some theories about it and I know it will be my favorite movie. One of my theories is based on the trailer, and is about Batman, Harley, and the Joker (played by Jared Leto). I think Harley and the Joker will drive a car away from Batman because they did something bad, then Batman will make the car land in water. The reason I will love this movie is because it will have most of my favorite villains, like Slip Shot, El Diablo, Harley, Killer Croc, and more.

Emmett Till’s murder

by Jeremy Martinez

Emmett Till was murdered on August 28th, 1955. The young Emmett was always a great child, even since he was very young; but segregation was very hard for a child like Emmett to grow up in, especially in the south, where black people were treated like they weren’t even people.

In the south, it was hard for black people to walk on the street without a white person screaming at them. If a black person (they were also called “colored” at that time) person and a white person were walking on the same sidewalk, the colored person would have to get off the sidewalk and let the white person walk by. If the colored person didn’t move, the white person often could slap him or her. During his life, Emmett Till would always try to stay out of trouble.

A brutal murder.

A brutal murder.

One time, as Emmett was going to the store to get gum, he saw a white woman and he was accused of whistling at her. Her husband heard about this, and he decided to take care of this situation himself. Emmett got to his house and he and his family all went to bed, and two white men showed up at Emmett’s door.

The white men took Emmett with him to a barn yard, and abused him and hit him with 49. magnum pistol. He was then shot, wrapped with barbed wire, and thrown into a river with a fan from a cotton gin tied to his body. His body was found at the end of the Mississippi River, bloated up with bullet wounds his body and blood and scratches all over him. His mother had an open casket at his funeral, and many people showed up–but because of how badly he was mutilated, many people fainted. Emmett’s mother moved to the north; she was still sad, but she was safer from all the troubles of the south.

After Till’s death, people fought political battles to stop the taking of colored lives. Sometimes  it would not turn out well, and many of them would be killed because of their protests. But eventually, after all these crises, people have started getting along. They started to rebuild and forgive for all that has happened, and African American people started to live freer happier lives in many places. Many found jobs that helped them pay for their new homes.

Emmett’s murder inspired people to stand up against racism. People used to be free to kill African Americans whenever they felt like it, but now people can go to jail for this kind of violence. Even though much of the old racism is still going on, African Americans can now become doctors, lawyers, and politicians, and this shows how society has grown over the years.

The First Tee Golf Program, Day One

imagesBy Caleb Myke

A few weeks ago during gym, instead of playing basketball, a group of us went to a golf course and learned about golf. I had an experience playing golf from a couple of years ago; before I came to this school, in the summer of 2012, I had gone and played on the same course. The program that taught us is called The First Tee.

I signed up for The First Tee, which we will now have every Friday until the 24th of June. Two weeks ago, we had our first practice on an actual golf course and I was very happy. The golf course we went to was very big and beautiful, with two very big driving ranges and 18 beautiful holes for the players. A driving range is a long piece of land where people hit balls as far as they can.

First, we went to the golf course’s cafe and we got free meals. After eating, we went to the putting green, which is where people work their short golf shots, which are known as putts. On the putting green, we played a game of golf tic tac toe and miniature golf. After that, we went to the driving range to hit some balls. During this, my dad surprised me and showed up at the driving range. I think I got the farthest hit of all the kids in our group, because I saw my balls go very far. After the driving range, we went to look at the other parts of the course. We didn’t do a lot of stuff other than that, because we got there late. After it was over, I told my coach I was really looking forward to next week.

Inspirational Quote by Reydi Ventura

never-forget“Forget what hurts you in the past, but never forget what it taught you.”–Shannon L. Alder

This teaches me to not hold things back and that  I should not care about the past. This quote also reminds me about when we lost in the playoffs for middle school baseball. We went down with a fight, but it hurt me a lot until I saw this quote and it made me feel better than I ever had. This also taught me to never hold on to the past, and to worry about the present instead. I Think a lot of people will be inspired by this quote and will feel better. That’s why this is the best quote I’ve ever heard of.

MY TOP FIVE SUPERHEROES!!!!!

fefc187beb76d8bdc91858c5e5cefdc2By Reydi  Ventura

Right now, the Eagle Express has a top five villains post, written by Miles Graham; but there can’t be a top 5 villains post without a top five heroes post!

5: Batman Batman is the best detective ever known. His parents died right in front of his eyes, and he wanted that to never happen to anyone again. He became Batman to save people, and swore to never kill when he fights crime. Batman’s arch enemy, the Joker, is on Miles’ page, too. Joker has taken Batman to his limit were he almost killed Joker because he brutally tortured Barbra Gordan AKA Batgirl, and made her paralyzed because he shot her in the spine. Batman has defeated the justice league several times that’s why he’s here on my list.

4:Sentry Sentry is the most powerful superhero you could ever know. He ripped Ares in two, and didn’t need any effort to do it. Sentry was once a part of the Avengers, and saved them from a man named Michael Korvac who was mind-controlled by a mysterious man. Sentry’s real name is Bob, and his arch-enemy is the Void, who tries to take control of Sentry to make him fifty times powerful than usual. He ripped Ares apart, so imagine how powerful he is!Spiderman1-1200x630-e1457634155946

3:Spider Man Spider Man is one of the first superheroes created by Stan lee. Spider Man’s real name is Peter Parker, and his parents died in a plane crash with a doctor named Curt Conners, who becomes The Lizard and tries to kill Peter many times. Peter has lived with his uncle Ben and aunt May; they took good care of him, but Ben got shot by a man named Flint Marco who later became Sandman. If you want to know more about Spider Man, read Robert Brown’s post The Lessons of the Spiderverse.

2:Arrow Arrow, aka Oliver Queen, protects Star City with Black Canary aka Laurel Lance, White Canary aka Sara Lance, and John Dingle. Olly (which is his nickname on the Arrow TV show) saves the world from numerous villains like Damien Dark who tried to kill Laurel but failed many times. Olly has also tried to defeat a villain (he’s a villain on the TV show, but in the comic he’s a villain who sometimes acts like a hero) named Death Stroke, but has failed at that, too. Oliver was once stranded on an island, an experience which taught him to become a superhero.12219416_945509568874680_542833342999970560_n-e1450740751324

1:Flash The Flash, aka Barry Allen, is a forensic scientist in Central City who was struck by dark matter in lightning form. The next day he found out he had super speed, and he went to the place that caused this: Star Labs, where there was a particle accelerator explosion. Barry fought many meta humans (humans with special powers), like Zoom and Reverse Flash, and he fights them to this day. To learn more about Flash, check out my other post, The History of the Flash, in a flash.

Zika: a virus that could change our world

zikatransmapby Miguel Garduno

Zika is the most recent virus that is affecting tropical areas around our world. The virus was originally found in a Ugandan forest that is called the Zika forest, and the first infection was found in a monkey.

Zika so far has caused brains to not develop properly and paralysis, but if it mutates then it can cause organ failure and seizures could also be a possibility. Zika has common systems like rash, joint pain, fever, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). It can cause birth defects, and it can be sexually transmitted from one partner to another. Zika is spreading into hot and humid countries, and soon it will infect the United States.

Zika is mostly transmitted by mosquitoes, and the mosquitoes that transmit Zika can also spread the Dengue and Chikungunya viruses. The mosquitoes spread Zika by laying eggs in water, or by just biting a person. The mosquitoes Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus are aggressive daytime biters, though they can also bite at night. There are a few different ways to prevent a mosquito bite. One way is to wear long sleeved shirts and long pants. Another way is to sleep under a mosquito netting. A third way to protect yourself is mosquito repellent. If you have a child, you should put a mosquito netting around their crib.

The larvae of the mosquitoes that transmit Zika.

The larvae of the mosquitoes that transmit Zika.

People think that the Zika virus was actually engineered as an experimental biological weapon by the biotech company Oxitc. A genetically modified mosquito for Zika is when a female mates with a GMO male, they lay eggs that hatch but the larvae dies before adulthood. In Brazil in 2012, Zika case maps reportedly matched the locations of tests conducted by Oxitec. the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) say that the virus was first discovered in 1947, and had further outbreaks in tropical Africa, southeast Asia, and the Pacific islands.

I think that Zika is a a serious problem, because it is spread by mosquitoes in tropical areas, which means that there will be more infections in the summer. People say that in 10 years, everyone will have Zika but there will be a cure by then. Zika is not deadly so far, but it’s very infectious, and at some point it could be worse than the Black Death. Scientists are looking at the DNA of the virus to see how it spreads in the human body.

Scientists are working on a cure for Zika, but we may not have enough time to develop it before it spreads all over the world.

5 places in the world that the public is prohibited from going

by Justin Mendoza

You’ve probably thought about a bunch of the places you want to go, for one reason or another. But have you ever thought about the places in this world you are prohibited from visiting? Well, you’re about to learn about a few in my list of the top five places in the world the public can’t visit.o-DEADLY-SNAKE-ISLAND-570

5: IIha da Queimada Grande

IIha da Queimada Grande, also known as Snake Island, is one of the most interesting places in this world you are not allowed to go and see. Snake Island is located off the coast of Brazil, and if you guessed that this island has snakes on it, you are correct. In fact, Snake Island is infested with snakes! Some estimate that the island has one snake per every square meter. This island is closed to the public, in order to protect its population of rare snakes such as the critically endangered and venomous Bothrops Insularis, which lives on a diet of birds. Some of the most deadliest snakes in the world live on Snake Island. Occasionally, some scientists are granted the opportunity to visit Snake Island..but unless you’re one of them, you probably won’t ever get to see it.imgres

4. Mount Weather Emergency Operation Center

The Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center is a place you probably wouldn’t want to go unless, as one Google reviewer states, “it’s the end of the world.” The Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center is controlled by the U.S Department of Homeland Security. It’s been in use since 1959. The facility is a major relocation site for the highest level of civilian and military officials in case of national disaster in the U.S. Still, this facility proves to be helpful in other ways. According to a letter to the editor of The Washington Post, on the day of the September 11th attacks most of the congressional leadership was evacuated to Mount Weather by helicopter.

3 RAF Menwith Hill

If you like giant golf balls, then you’re going to like this location. The Royal Air Force Menwith Hills is a Royal Air Force station near Harrogate, North Yorkshire in England. This facility was built in 1954, but it has been in use since 1958. The facility was also in use during the Cold War. The Cold War was a state of political and military tension after World War 2, between the powers in the so-called Western bloc and the powers in the so-called Eastern bloc.area51_1768301b

2 Area 51

This list would not be complete without Area 51. “Ahh–Area 51! The aliens are coming!!!” No, this list is only including real facts and theories. I’m not trying to say whether I do or I don’t believe in aliens; I’m just saying that anything mentioned in this article is backed up with evidence. The United States Air Force facility commonly known as Area 51 was a remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base, within the Nevada test and training range. The Central Intelligence Agency [CIA] says that the facility’s correct name is Homey Airport and Groom Lake. The special-use airspace around the field is referred to as a restricted area. The base’s current primary purpose is unknown, but from its history it most likely supports the development and testing of experimental aircraft. The intense secrecy around the base is the main reason for conspiracy theories about aliens or UFOs (unidentified flying objects).imgres

1 Moscow Metro-2

The Moscow Metro is the informal name for a purported secret underground metro system which parallels the public Moscow MetroThe system was built during the time of Joseph Stalin, and was codenamed D-6. It is supposedly still operational. The length of Metro-2 is rumored to exceed that of the public Metro. It is said to have four lines, and to lie 50–200 meters deep. It is also said to connect the Kremlin with the  Federal Security Service (FSB) headquarters. The public is not allowed on it, because the controllers of the Moscow Metro are doing something in the facility.

The Moscow Metro-2, Area 51, RAF Menwith Hill, Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center, and Snake Island are all places in the world you are prohibited as a civilian. These places are obviously not all the places in the world you are prohibited to go, to but these are a few of them. Hopefully you will take a hint from this post, and not attempt to go to any of these places.because that would be a bad idea.

The chosen one.

Entry 1

Today is my last day at Battle Ground High. My name is Apollo Ren.  I found out that I was one of the chosen ones for something big today. I have been through multiple things that kids should not go through.

Air Ride was reading the personal journal of his friend, Apollo Ren, who gave it to him so he would know the story of how his life was before crazy things started happening.

Apollo was reading a book on weapons and how to make them. As he was reading his book a girl with light gray hair sat next to him and talked to him. “Hey Apollo”said Amy. Apollo got up from the chair and ran for his life. Apollo felt like his heart was going to fall out his chest every time he was next to Amy. He ran to his room and tried to for get about what happen by going to sleep. He made him self some food and went to bed. As Apollo was sleeping he has been having a dream about a door. Every night he would try and run and open the door. But on the other side of the door was the unknown. Until today, he ran and ran and got to the door. It was a little light then started to lighten up the dark dream. He awoke from his dream and had a sigh on his arm. He felt weird then the mark started to glow. When he rubbed the mark it started to cover his body with a white glow. Apollo got nerves and started to float off the ground then it stop. He did not care about it for the rest of the day. He saw Amy And did not act weird for the first time.

Games that involve difficult decisions

by Jahiem McCoy

There are some video games where you make decisions that involve real life situations. Some of these are really hard situations, which will be discussed in this article.IMG_20151024_032641

One example is a game called One Chance, which is about a scientist who made the world think he cured cancer but he really created a deadly gas which destroys every living cell, including plant cells. You have the decision to try to fix the problem, even though it might not work, or spend time with your family. You can only choose one option, and you can’t undo it, so deciding is hard to do.

There are also decisions in video games that aren’t really about real life, but still involve hard decisions. For example, there is a game called Splatoon. Splatoon is a game where you fight for your turf and regularly the teams are random but with a thing called Splatfest, which is something that asks you a question which gives you two options. These options determine which team you’re going to be on, and which team you’re going to be fighting. The questions update frequently, and you only get to come across them once. One time, the options were love or money, which is a hard decision in real life.

There are also other games, like Bioshock, In Bioshock, the game starts when player-character Jack is a passenger on a plane that goes down in the Atlantic Ocean. As the only survivor, Jack makes his way to a nearby lighthouse that houses a bathysphere (a chamber for deep sea observations) terminal which takes him to Rapture. Jack is contacted via radio by a character named Atlas, and is guided to safety from the Splicers and the perils of the nearby city, which is rundown and dangerous. Atlas requests Jack’s help in stopping Ryan, who he claims has trapped his family in a docked bathysphere. When Jack encounters a wandering Little Sister and its fallen Big Daddy, Atlas urges Jack to kill the Little Sister to harvest her Adam for himself which makes you confronted with a serious choice: do you want to do the right thing and be less powerful? Or do you want to be evil and have an easier time at the game?

There is another game that has many hard decisions; the game is called Telltale. In Telltale, almost every choice you make is one where there’s no ultimate right and wrong. They put a very short timer on each decision, so that you don’t have the time to look up what decision does what, making it almost impossible to cheat like most other video game decisions–thus making them have hard choices to make in that video game.

These are games that include hard decisions, and will make you think about consequences when you play them.
